Early Years Foundation Stage Curriculum
At Sandilands Primary School we create a supportive and nurturing climate and ethos which provides children with a sense of safety, security, belonging and self worth which allows them to access their learning. In Early Years we foster and capitalise on children's instincts to create, communicate, belong, understand and build on prior learning. We provide genuine reasons, irresistible provocations and a real purpose to their learning. Our learning environments are set up to promote independent learning encouraging children to make their own informed decisions and choices. Enhancements are regularly added to all areas of the provision as a stimulus to inspire interest and engage children. Our practitioners have a sound knowledge and deep understanding of how children learn.

Our Sandilands pupils needs as learners are recognised through the three Characteristics of Effective Teaching and Learning:
- playing and exploring - children investigate and experience things, and ‘have a go’;
- active learning - children concentrate and keep on trying if they encounter difficulties, and enjoy achievements; and
- creating and thinking critically - children have and develop their own ideas, make links between ideas, and develop strategies for doing things.
We ensure that our Reception pupils begin their next phase of learning in Key Stage One with a range of first hand experiences that bring awe and wonder. We aim to provide our young learners with stimulating and engaging learning hooks such as visiting a farm, making a meal, holding an owl, building a den and growing butterflies.

Oral Health Programme
At Sandilands Primary School we recognise that healthy eating habits and good oral health
practise goes hand in hand.
A quarter of Manchester’s 5 year olds suffer from tooth decay in 3-4 teeth. On average these
children miss 3 days of school due to dental problems. That’s why, here at Sandilands, we
believe in prevention and education of good oral health.
