Science

At Sandilands Primary School, we aim to provide a broad and stimulating sequence of lessons for our pupils. We use the National Curriculum and Development Matters to inform the teaching and learning of Science, linking to our local area. We strive to make our pupils confident, independent scientists by encouraging them to investigate developments in the real world through observation, questioning and experimentation. The development of these skills begins in EYFS and is built upon throughout the school.

EYFS

In EYFS, the children play and explore new concepts, in their natural environments. They are given opportunities to observe and manipulate objects and begin to explain why some things occur.

Key Stage 1

In KS1, the children will experience the natural and constructed world around them. They are encouraged to be curious and ask questions about what they notice and develop their understanding of scientific ideas.

Key Stage 2

In KS2, the children develop a deeper understanding of the wider world. They explore different ways of thinking, how to research concepts and how to communicate their ideas effectively.

Fundamentally, we want to inspire our pupils and build an enthusiasm and enjoyment for Science. We aim to achieve this by ensuring that all pupils:

  • Develop scientific knowledge and understanding through the three areas of Science (Biology, Chemistry and Physics)
  • Develop and extend the children’s scientific concept of the world around them
  • Introduce pupils to scientific vocabulary and language
  • Build on their curiosity and sense of awe of the natural world
  • Develop their enjoyment and interest in science
  • Incorporate their scientific skills and knowledge into other areas of the curriculum
