Spanish
Intent
Our Spanish curriculum ensures that children are taught to develop an interest in other languages in a way that is stimulating and enjoyable. The skills, knowledge and understanding gained through learning a language contribute to the development of children’s oracy and literacy and to their understanding of their own culture and those of others. We have a specialist Spanish teacher, who delivers a curriculum that progressively develops children’s skills in languages through regular taught lessons all the way through from Year 3 to Year 6, in preparation for children to transfer the language curriculum accurately and confidently as they move to KS3. All children can access the Spanish curriculum and are able to make progress.
Implementation
Across KS2, the scheme of work supports the teaching and learning of Spanish. This scheme of work provides clear progression in developing children’s oral and written skills and knowledge, providing resources which are curriculum compliant and encourages active participation through using games, role-play, songs and rhymes as well as reading and writing quality materials. Children progressively acquire a growing bank of vocabulary organised around topics. Topics include: numbers, colours, animals, house and home, food and drink, the classroom, clothes and hobbies. Knowledge organisers are also used to teach children key vocabulary which ensures that the meaning of the word and the context in which it is to be used is fully embedded. Topics will develop confidence in the 4 language skills of listening, reading, writing and speaking. Children will be able to say Spanish sounds and the Spanish alphabet. Lessons are sequenced so that prior learning is considered and opportunities for revision of language and grammatical concepts are built into lessons as well as a revision lesson at the end of the year to formally assess skills learnt within the units.
Impact
By the time children leave Sandilands Community Primary School we aim for all children to have a natural curiosity and confidence to explore other countries, cultures and languages, accepting that, in a multilingual society, it is a valuable skill to be able to communicate effectively with others in another language. They will be engaged and prepared to continue language learning in KS3. Parents are aware of how their child is performing in Spanish as this is communicated in annual reports.
